On the heels of a two-week-long protest in front of the Administration of Child Services (ACS) headquarters, which led to the arrest of the Rev. Herbert Daughtry, community activist and senior pastor of House of the Lord Church, and Tamika Mallory, national executive director of the National Action Network, supporters of the Alonzo Daughtry Memorial Day Care Center still search for answers.
After serving the Brooklyn community for 44 years, the Alonzo Daughtry Memorial Day Care Center did not qualify for funds under the newly formed EarlyLearn NYC program and is slated to close in February.
The center’s director, Karen S. Daughtry, said that she received a tip that her scores were intentionally lowered. According to Daughtry, her initial documentation indicated that the three evaluators scoring the Alonzo Daughtry Day Care Center’s proposal gave the facility an 82.6. Later, she was told that a quality assurance team had to re-evaluate her scores, which resulted in a failing grade.
“This is clearly a deliberate takeover of day-care centers, some of which have been in the community 20, 30 years—or in our case, 44 years,” said the Rev. Daughtry.
