Before work
after seven eleven hazelnut coffee
the subway ride to 23 Ely
thru the tunnel upstairs
spinning turnstile
pass token booth
whirling axis of revolving doors
ushering onto a polished black floor
like shiny patent leather shoes
carefully one steps
afore the escalator
and the silvery jingling ching a ling of bangles
a woman bobs up clearing glass egress
entree silver shoe repair
Fidel stretched hand swinging in the air
as though simulating tango moves
whisking her happily
onto naugahyde sovereignty
the proverbial arrival
readying her riding boots
leather balm first
swipe, swipe; wipe, wipe
bull it,whip and spit to beam
amuse mid men
cherish cigars
unfolded Wall Street Journal
sliding peeps over bifocals
unapologetic for her presence
shaded under the cover of "Revolutionary Suicide"
an ernest interest
upon departure
synchronize "have a nice day"
from gentlemen's survey
of the only woman at the silver shoe shine...

Sayounara II
Sayounara
to all that could have been
but never was or will
this is goodbye
to our communion
verses composed
short kisses
expressing endearing pecks
so long...
to immortal tunes and Jackie's songs
too many to remember
to our generous laughter
at your theater call for impersonation
to "let me take this; it's her"
bathroom calls
long enough to occupy extracting
bit pieces coconut from a fruit bar
just to keep cooly quiet
so long to cribbing
goodbye to your woman
holding you down
while I keep you comfortably up
nights reserved for two
so long to ten minutes away
caffine, cigarettes and my whiskey
the black butterfly netted is now free
to flutter...
with each delicate wing a wave Sayounara

Strands (A Poem)
Her hair shading
strands over the left eye
under a pressured tremor
small beads of perspiration
trickle slowly around the temple
of her freshly pressed hair
springing spice
"ultra sheen original hair dress"
he recalled
colored girls
grown women lining the inside
of their mamas medicine cabinets
or inside the kitchen drawer
next to the burnt straightening comb
she reminded him of big sister Evelyn
enduring rituals
hair washing, combing thru thick locks
drying and pressing it clean straight
scented pomades
at Mrs. Beach Beauty Parlor
she is everything in a memory
beneath him
flipping thru moments
beautiful as Black Ivory and Blue Magic
french kissing Nina on the rooftop
time vanish promptly
swelling between her legs
reeling over her ellipsoidal prettiness
tarnish mind's eye lighted by a shimmer
drooping strands over her left eye...

Black Name Calling (A Poem)
Disrespected
neglected
mistreated, abuse and used
patching up old wounds
shuffle, hustle buffoons
painted vignettes
apparatus of the cracker
we are the nigger, coon, spade, crow, darkie, eggplant, jungle bunny, Kunta, Lincoln's mistake, Lucius, Mandingo, Moolie, picker ninny, skillet, spook, brick, buck wheat
buckwheat a field where white girls sleep
bumper lips get them gals chasing the kiss
101 epithets
those crackers, peck of wood, honky, chalk and cake face
dirty words for every race
no name like "nigger" that shame
the world calling of the black race
scrawled across walls
sidewalks jewel avenue
youth of every color
try to deface, disgrace
lace with racial hate
can you relate
black people
are you still chasing ghost
spreading legs on them folks bed sheets
a repeat rape
this time consensual
ghetto gagging black sluts
Jersey boys branded with swastikas
holding her "favorite piece of fruit"
watermelon
internet deluge
our sister females
bootie shaking
jumping around
down on the ground
clapping butt cheeks
world degradation
this is the new generation
bereft shame
bucks, bamboozled fame
housing sin
covering up who we are
i mean who are we really?
who are you; who am i
i go from black to black
all day long
facing the other side of midnight
just to get by
every morning
faking a smile
just to get by
the armor always color
brown, black all day long
i walk black
no acting black; i am black
motherfucking fuck black
get down, dance black
i am rhythm and blues
i am little walter harmonica screaming ...
at the world
i am a black woman
poor yes; confused never
those who try to define
are wasting time
trying to figure this black chameleon out
despise the lies
chiffon atonement to pacify
while some brothers and sisters
still searching for their ultimate dream
instead of realizing we are the kings and queens
for some brothers who thought the movement
was to move in with a white chick
black power!
for the sisters fixation
green eyes and "He gots good hair..."
black power to you!

Occult Suspension (A Poem)
Last night
like every night
I searched for you
patulous verge
delving altering levels
I searched for you
in dreams that seem real
so real I could feel
feel you...
liberate earthly flesh
disciple Mami Wata
running through the maze
dank caves
thru mushy swamps
deep holes no bottom
falling off cliffs
letting go ...
I searched all night
there were no days
dark with no light
still you were not there...
splitting the earth
into three quarters, quarter, half
still you were not there...
fought Abaia, Dilong
machete severed heads
searching their cavities
for you... God
gleaning incubus
refuse to be sacred
a dream revisit nightly
uncovering your hiding
deep inside the subconscious
still you were not there...
until the night; I returned to the light
finding you at the altar
now we are here...
